Kawasaki Heavy Industries started as a shipbuilding company in 1896, and makes a huge number of diverse products, with the ‘Motorcycles & Engine’ division creating bikes, ATVs and other vehicles. The first Kawasaki motocycle began development in 1949, and was released in 1954 under the Meihatsu brand name. It was only in the 1960s that Kawasaki merged with Merguro to create Kawasaki Motorcycle Co Ltd in 1963.
1969 saw the Kawasaki H1 March III arrive with a powerful 500cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine, and in 1973, the Kawasaki Z1 is released and later evolves into the original Z-1000. The GPz550 is notable in launching the 600cc class when it’s launched in 1981, and it’s later joined by the GPz900R ‘Ninja’ in 1983.
